What did the judges think?
Chair of judges Professor Tamsin Mather FRS said: “This reminds me of the sort of book that had me engrossed for hours as a child. It is packed full of amazing pictures and facts but also details the systems used to organise our knowledge. I really like how the author combines information about fantastic exotic rocks, minerals and landscapes from all over the world, along with encouraging readers to explore the rocks in their own back gardens. It certainly excites the explorer in me, and I hope it will our young judges!”
About the author and illustrator
Nancy Dickmann grew up reading encyclopaedias for fun, and after many years working in children’s publishing, she now has her dream job as a full-time author. She specialises as a science writer and has had over 300 titles published, on topics such as space, animals, sustainable energy, the human body and, of course, rocks. She’s found that the best part of the job is researching and learning new things – including getting to interview a real astronaut to find out about using the toilet in space! All that squirrelling away of interesting facts has provided a boost for her sideline hobby as a quiz-show contestant, and helped her become BBC Mastermind champion in 2009.
